A practical guide on how to relax before your big day.

You might be completely new to dancing, and it may feel overwhelming to think you have to perform in front of your guests. Here are some user-friendly tips that will allow you to have the time of your life dancing.

1. Tackling Nervousness

Don’t push away the nerves; instead, make them work with you: it is natural to feel anxious and maybe even stressed—this way, your body is preparing when something important is coming up. The hack is to befriend the nervousness and use it as your fuel. If you allow it to be, you can shift your state to feeling excited and ready.

2. Preparation

Nothing relaxes us more than knowing we have done our best preparing.

Consistent practices with your partner or solo, even a quick 5 mins recap, is the key to feeling calm.  Plan these with your fiancé up to the wedding day. Once you have danced something repeatedly, your mind calms down as the dance becomes familiar.

4. Find Your Flow

Once you finished working on the choreography with your teacher and went over the details of every move, start developing the momentum when you dance. This skill is beneficial if you don’t have lots of time to prepare. Details are super important, but more so is the flow of the whole thing. Go over the dance with the music from the beginning to the end without stopping, so you get used to the feeling of dancing it entirely.

5. Venue Rehearsal

This one is super important.

We strongly recommend having your very final rehearsal at the venue on the day before the reception starts. Do expect the dance to feel VERY different from what you have practised in the studio. By practising on the actual dance floor, you will have an idea of space and how to floor craft your choreography so everyone can enjoy watching you both.

6. What do we do if…

Go over your game plan in case something is happening you haven’t planned for during your dance. At Dance Space, we go over different options of going back into the basic step to regroup and continue your dance from any point in the dance routine if you forget the steps or the music accidentally stops in the middle of the dance. Ask your teacher for these options. Trust me; they will make all the difference to how confident you feel.

7. Don’t make it too long or too complicated

Having a very long and complicated choreography may feel like an overload. Keep it short and relatively simple, adding some fancy steps, drops, and lifts you particularly like. We recommend going for 1:30 -2mins and discussing the level of difficulty you require with your teacher before starting your dance classes.
