Your first wedding dance experience largely depends on the guidance you receive from your dance instructor. Ideally, the final product should match your expectation, and the process should feel exciting and productive.

Here are some top tips on what to look for when looking for a dance teacher.

Partnering

As you will be dancing as a couple, your dance instructor must have experience in partnering dance styles such as Ballroom, Latin-American, Argentine tango, Swing, or American smooth. It is ideal if they specialise in one of the above, indicating in-depth knowledge. Partnering is an essential skill for creating your first dance routine that looks top-notch.

Organisation

Planning is everything. Often, couples have limited time with dance preparation. Understandably, you are busy organising other bits and pieces. Go over your lessons plan with your instructor before starting your classes. Ideally, this will consider things like your personal way of learning and the amount of time you have to your big day, allowing you extra time to perfect the dance and get feedback. It is a good sign if they mention the importance of at-home practice and are happy to provide input between your sessions.

Competence

Ask your teacher if they hold a teaching qualification.

Competence ensures you will be learning the correct dance technique; thus, what you invest in your dance lesson will stay with you for years to come. You will be able to dance with your partner on any occasion, not just at your wedding reception.

Soft Skills

See how you feel during the first interaction with your instructor. Ideally, they would express interest in your vision of the perfect first dance. At Dance Space, we ask our clients to think of a couple of words to describe the dance they are looking to do during the online consultation. Detail-orientated questions ensure we are spot on with the choreography going forward. It is also essential that they are accommodating, friendly yet professional.
